Welcome

A Slow Stroll Around Menorca

Then join me for this guided Camino Confidence 90-km/ 56-mile hike along the stunning Southern coastline of the island of Menorca.

This walk will take you along some of the most breathtaking white sandy beaches, private rocky calas with crystal clear turquoise waters and of course the stunning green forest and the islands’ luscious pastures dotted with inquisitive Menorcan sheep.

For those history buffs out there, Menorca is steeped in history, its bronze age past is still evident with its famous Talyot sites and we mustn´t forget the incredible Isabel II Mola fortress which was built built in the 19th century to keep the British at bay. This imposing fort located at the entrance of the port is a must see. You can do a self-guided tour with audio in English. A possible activity for one of our afternoons here.

Menorca also has one of the longest natural harbors in the world. It is 5 kilometers (3 miles) long and is lined with a wide variety of buzzing international restaurants and Cafes to suit everyone's taste. I challenge you to walk the whole length and back.

Finally, I will regale you with some of the most amazing myths and legends that have been passed down from generation to generation.  You won´t believe it.

Those of you who know me, know that I love slow strolls.  I just think that If you are going to travel halfway across the world to somewhere you have never visited before then you have to make the most of it.  Take photos, chill on the beach, visit historical sites, soak up the atmosphere and really enjoy being in nature.

Some facts about this wonderful route

A little history along the way

Menorca is the first place in Spain to see the sunrise each day and has 2700 days of sunshine.

The island was recognized as a unesco biosphere reserve in 1993.

Menorca is famous for its gin xoriguer which is often paired with lemon during fiesta time to produce the refreshing drink ´pomada´ but beware, it has a sting in its tail.

The highest point is Mont Toro which is 358m (1,175 ft) above sea level (we will be able to visit Mont Toro)

Mayonnaise originated here (another great legend)

The island has more beaches than Mallorca and Ibiza together

It is only 48km (30 miles) long and 16km (10 miles wide)

Our route

Day by day

1

Arrive into Mahon airport and take the transfer to Ciutadella.

Firstly, I would ask that you aim to arrive in Mahon airport for around 1pm (1300 hours) (or earlier) so that we can all meet for our minibus transfer to Ciutadella. We will be transported to our 4-star hotel in Ciutadella which is about a 45-minute drive where we will check in to our rooms.

On arriving, I will be happy to organise our wonderful city guide Isabel to take you for a guided historical tour around the winding streets of Ciutadella before enjoying a meal in one of the bustling restaurants dotted around the atmospheric old town or port.

If you prefer to wander around by yourself, Ciutadella has an incredible vibe, and is quite honestly one of my favourite cities in the world. You can enjoy meandering through the narrow-cobbled streets of the old town, taking in the beautiful Menorcan architecture and sophisticated boutiques and art stores and hang out in one of its many bustling cafés people watching and soaking up the laid-back atmosphere.

2

October Ciutadella ➜ Cap d’Artrux Distance 13km approx ( 8 miles) Difficulty Medium/difficult Estimated walking 6 hours

Today is our first day of walking and we will walk through the old town of Ciutadella, on a rocky and rugged path along the coastline of low sea cliffs to Cap Artrutx. This part of the walk is practically flat with no elevation, but it is the most technical section of the trip so prepare yourself with either footwear with some ankle support or thick soles.

This is, however, one of the most beautiful places around Ciutadella and our destination, the Artrutx lighthouse, enjoys the most spectacular views across the Mediterranean and we can finish this tricky day with a well-deserved drink overlooking the glistening sea.

Once here we will be collected at a time predetermined by me and return to our 4-star hotel in Ciutadella where we can simply relax or enjoy one of numerous other activities in this stunning city.

3

Cap d’Artrutx ➜  Son Saura Distance 8 km approx (5 miles) Difficulty level medium Estimated walking 4 hours

We will be transported from the hotel to the urbanization of Calan Bosch with its beautiful internal port where there are cafes and supermarkets.  We will take some time here to have a coffee and a bathroom break and buy some supplies for the day’s walk.

Then we will make our way across the small bridge at the entrance of the port and walk towards a beach called son Xorigeur.

Along this stage our path will take us alongside some incredible, virgin stretches of beaches of white sand and turquoise waters. We will pass several important urbanisations, including Cala en Bosc where I lived for a while as a Sovereign Concierge.

We can discover some bunkers built by the Republican forces during the Civil War before finally arriving at what is regarded as a favourite beach by many, Son Saura where we can remove our socks and shoes and soak our feet off in the sea.

We will then be collected by our transfer back to enjoy our last night in Ciutadella and get our bags prepared to be transported to our next hotel.

4

Son Saura ➜  Cala Galdana  Distance 10 km approx ( 6.2 miles) Difficulty level medium/difficult Estimated walking 5 hours

Today we will be dropped off by our transport in Son Saura, pick up the route where we left off and make our way to another stunning resort called Cala Galdana. If we are feeling up to it, we can wander a little inland to see the remains of the Talaia d Ártrutx, a circular defensive tower built in 1617 to protect Cala en Turqueta when it suffered from raids carried out by Turkish Pirates.

The elevation gain is around 151 metres in this section so it’s a little more challenging, but it is also regarded as the most beautiful section so far.  The beaches and coves will render you speechless.

5

Cala Galdana (viewpoint) ➜  Sant Tomàs Distance 11 km approx 6.5 miles) Difficulty level medium Estimated walking 6 hours

I´m actually running out of adjectives for these small resorts. Santo Tomas is another wonderfully tasteful resort and we will be staying here for three nights in a beautiful 4-star hotel. There are watersports available here if you fancy an active afternoon.

This is a long but fabulous walk, one of my favourites.  It does finish with a bit of a walk along a sandy beach, which, ( I won’t lie) is quite a challenge but just around the final bend you will arrive at a fantastic beach bar in Santo Tomas where you can reward yourself with a cold drink.

6

Sant Tomàs ➜  Son Bou (Official day off)

Optional Walk: Distance 7 km approx (4.5 miles) Difficulty level Medium Estimated walking 3.5 hours

Voted the most stunning beach on the island, it seems to go on forever.  This is a small laid-back resort with some great shopping and bars and is a favourite among many visitors to the island.

You can also visit the ruins of a 5th century basilica church located next to the beach and a small nature reserve that is home to many different birds including naughty geese and ducks.

7

Son Bou ➜   Cala en Porter Distance 9 km approx (5 miles) Difficulty level medium Estimated walking 4.5 hours

Cala en Porter is a slightly busier resort and is a favourite among many ex-pats who choose to live here.  At the end of the walk, we will arrive at another beach bar next to the stunning Cala en Porter beach.

This is another challenging but wonderful day where you will spot many different species of local birds and have a photo taken in one of the caves.  The rock formations are spectacular.

8

Es Canutells ➜  Binibèquer Distance 11 km approx (6.2 miles) Difficulty level medium Estimated walking 6 hours

This day starts with a walk along a quiet road and leads us first to Binissfuller where it is likely that the restaurants will be closed.  There is, however, a nice peaceful beach here and of course some toilets.  (you will find toilets at most of the beach locations).

We will walk along a mixture of country roads and asphalt and make our way to the beautiful tiny man-made village of Binibèquer which was built back in 1968 and resembles a traditional fishing village.  We will take some time here at the end of our walk to wander around this quaint village and maybe even enjoy a tasty lunch before being taken back to hotel in Sant Tomas

9

Binibèquer ➜ Punta Prima- Distance 6 km approx (4 miles) Difficulty level easy Estimated walking 3 hours

This is our final walk of this trip and is basically a short wander through a couple of small seaside villages to Punta Prima which boasts another sensational beach with crystal clear water, soft fine white sand all under the eyes of an ancient lighthouse. You can either enjoy a nice coffee or snack here or maybe if you’re brave, take a dip in the sea.

10

Day off to explore Mahon

There is so much on offer in this beautiful city.  You can visit la Mola, the large fort built at the port entrance to protect Mahon from attack.  You could pop over to king’s island on a yellow catamaran which is where the British built a hospital in the 18th century.  You could visit a cheese factory to see how they make the famous Menorcan cheese or perhaps you would enjoy the gin factory or a spot of wine tasting.  There are also some wonderful museums to visit and of course the fantastic port.

Good to know

Everything else you need to know

  • We will stay in a variety of excellent standard accommodations from rural hotels, rural houses, apartments and city hotels.

As a rule, you will be accommodated in twin rooms with private bathrooms. The price for this trip is based on 10 people walking and 2 people sharing a room. You can choose who you would like to share with, or your Guide will allocate rooms.

Please note: accommodation options are subject to change due to high demand but will always be high standard and with breakfast included.

  • There is only one airport on the island.  There are direct flights from the UK, Barcelona and other European cities.

Some women choose to spend a few days in Barcelona before getting on an internal flight to Mahon or even arrive in Mahon a few days earlier.

Whatever you decide to do, I would ask you to be in a position where you can be at Mahon airport on the first day around or before 1300 hours (1pm) as I will be organising a transfer at around 1330 (1.30pm) to Ciutadella.

  • A deposit of 350 euros (plus a bank processing fee of 15 euros when paying by credit card) is required to reserve your place.  This deposit is non- refundable. Please use the following link to pay your deposit

    https://buy.stripe.com/fZe2ar6ZRajl0iA3cA

  • Accident insurance within Spain and the islands during the dates of your walk is included in the price of this trip, however, we at Camino Confidence highly recommend both travel and medical insurance for the flight and outside the trip dates.  We also recommend you pay a repatriation insurance.  You will be required to email proof of purchase to us or sign an opt out form.

  • Many people ask us if they have to walk as part of a group.  The answer is that it is entirely up to you.  We usually like the group to walk together on the first day, just while you familiarise yourselves with the terrain and signage but after that, we at Camino Confidence encourage you to walk at a pace that is comfortable with you.

What most women enjoy about walking as a group is the camaraderie, and the fact that they have company for evening meals and extra activities if they wish. Please bear in mind that taxis can organized for you should you require extra support.

  • While being transferred back to our hotel each day we will have a chat about our day.  We will discuss how you feel, how the day was for you, any issues you may have.  We will also look at the following day, the weather, the time we prefer to start walking, organize any taxis required, decide what to carry and point out where the facilities are along the route. I will also send this information to the group WhatsApp.

  • Communication will be via messaging app WhatsApp, and there will be two dedicated private groups. One is for general chat, where members of the group can keep in touch and even share photos. The other is for specific information like links to accommodation – the group will have read-only access to this, but only the guide will be able to post.

  • Although this route has little elevation, there are still some relevantly steep ascents and descents and parts of it are quite technical and require concentration.  A strong body and a positive mindset will not only help prevent injuries which could result in you aborting your walk altogether, but it will also increase your enjoyment of this amazing experience.

Please consider bringing a couple of pairs of walking footwear suitable for rocky surfaces, inclines and descents.

  • The cost of transporting 1 bag each of no restricted weight is included in the price. If you require more than one bag to be transported, then this will be at your own cost. Please do not attach anything to the outside of your luggage as it may be lost or damaged. Also do not transport items of value.

If you have to transport a CPAP machine or anything else that is necessary for your trip them make sure they are wrapped up carefully in your luggage.

Try to make your luggage as obvious to you as possible with perhaps a bright coloured scarf attached to it.

The bags must be left where and at a time instructed by your guide.

Check your back carefully before moving it and inform the guide if there is any damage (just to reassure you, I have never had a bag damaged in 3 years).

Just be aware that it is your responsibility to get your bags to your room from the drop of point and to return them the next day. Please bear in mind that not all accommodations have lifts so you may need required to carry them up stairs

  • There is free WIFI available at all of our accommodations and cafes and bars on the route.

  • A fantastic buffet breakfast is included in the cost of the trip but not lunch or dinner, this is to offer you more flexibility to eat what you want, when you want. There are some cafes and restaurants on the route and there are supermarkets where you can buy fruit, snacks and water. Each of the three hotels do offer to provide a packed lunch if necessary.

  • As you know, transfers are provided each day from and to the hotel around 9.00 am and 14.00 (2pm), however if you require transport outside of these hours, there are some taxis on the island, and we are visiting outside the main holiday months so they may be available.

However, they will likely be coming from the centre of the island so there will be a wait involved and this option is not as easy as it is on the Camino because there are some areas with no phone coverage. This expense is not included in the trip.

Please note that taxis cannot be flagged down in the street.

  • The beauty of staying for several nights in the same hotel is that you can basically take days off when you need them.  The only complicated days are the days when we transfer to our new hotels and in this case, you will probably need to pay for a taxi to get you to the next hotel.

I have allocated a rest day in the middle of the walk where you could simply rest by the pool, go for a swim or perhaps read that book you’ve been meaning to read for months.  Also, there is a day off in Mahon because the last days walk into Menorca is long and on tarmac, so instead, you will be able to enjoy exploring Mahon or stocking up on presents for your family

  • It is customary to tip a guide in Spain if you are happy with their service, however it is not obligatory. If you do choose to tip, the amount you tip is entirely up to you.

It is also customary to tip waiters, local guides etc. if you are happy with their service 10% of the bill is recommended if you are eating, if you are just having a coffee then it is normal just to leave the difference.
